FIVE FOR FRIDAY

1. Wow. Launching a book is pretty darn awesome. Thanks to everyone for your well wishes! Here's one of the ways I celebrated:

For those of you who haven't experienced this little piece of heaven, it's white chocolate bread pudding from Chuck's Fish. DELICIOUS.

2. Reviews are coming in! Check out this one from Bookpage.com -- "a tale that will stay with the reader forever," among other things! FOREVER! Y'all, that's a long time!!

3. After all that hoopla about snow, we got maybe ten minutes of flurries. That's it. Typical Alabama.

4. And yes, Alabama won the National Championship! Lots of happy folks in my neighborhood. :)

5. It's Poetry Friday! Miss Rumphius has Roundup -- my contribution is this lovely poem by John Updike. I particularly love the first stanza. (Also, I am proud to report that I've written 2 1/2 poems this week! After a wee drought. Feels GOOD.)

JANUARY

The days are short,
The sun a spark
Hung thin between
The dark and dark.

Fat snowy footsteps
Track the floor,
And parkas pile up
Near the door.

The river is
A frozen place
Held still beneath
The trees' black lace.

The sky is low
The wind is gray.
The radiator
Purrs all day.

  1. My book will get here today... yeah! I told Kane last night that you was coming to his school and he nagged his mother all evening to go buy him your book... during a National Championship game that Alabama was playing in... is that kid adopted??? Alabama fans scream, stomp, swear... just a little but we never never nag during a game.
One of this days I'm going to try to write the words to express how happy I'm for you and your baby. You both are "New York Best Sellers" in my eyes.

  2. Congratulations on your new novel!
I'm going to make a note to look for it next time I'm at the bookstore. I've been hearing great things about it, and I love the Gee's Bend quilts.

  3. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog today. I love the quote. So, so true. I'm adding your January poem to my collection. The"fat snowy footsteps" and "purring radiator" are perfect January images. Congratulation, too, on your novel. I'm going to track down LEAVING GEE'S BEND this weekend.

  5. Must be very exciting. I agree every quilt tells a story. My grandmother hand-stitched one for each of her grandchildren. She's a very conscientious person, and it shows in her stitching precision. Mine is a nine-patch, the first one she made. It's one of my most cherished possessions.
