Picasso Fox poem

Hello and Happy Poetry Friday! Be sure to visit Tabatha at The Opposite of Indifference for Roundup.

Now that we are entering the last quarter of the year (!), I've got my One Little Word on my mind... WHIMSY. How has whimsy played into my life? When I look around my house, I see a whole lot of whimsy! Here's the latest addition:

Yep, I repurposed a leaky canoe into a raised bed garden! Don't you dig the blue paint? I planted kale for fall, and I kind of love it. :)

I think I've added some whimsy to my writing life, too...taking more chances, being more playful, stretching my imagination...

For this week's ArtSpeak: Animals, I've got another Picasso for you! And a bonus poem, too. It kind of emerged as I was trying to write about the fox. (Don't you love when that happens?!) Thank you so much for reading.

a lone duck calls
and from the tall grass a fox
sets world ablaze

- Irene Latham

...and speaking of foxes...here's the bonus poem, just right for this time of year! :)

with a fox for
a soul, it blazes all hours
this autumn maple

  1. "Whimsy" is a great word (and philosophy). I enjoyed the interplay of your foxy haiku. Beautiful maple! None of our leaves are looking like that yet.

  2. Whimsy is one of my favorite words (along with quirky). And I LOVE foxes, so find both your poems absolutely delightful. Your blue canoe garden is the best!!!

  3. I love 'whimsy', too, Irene & that blue canoe! Both poems are wonderful, odes to autumn. I still feel lucky to catch a glimpse of our neighborhood fox. Our trees have turned only a bit, love that maple blaze! Happy weekend!

  5. Ooooh, that Picasso sketch paired with the leaves - the brightness of a fox-souled maple tree is such a joyful and whimsical thing. Love that canoe!

  8. Such a fun blue canoe and full of kale too, which is kinda whimsical also. Nice fox continuum here and that leaf is blazingly beautiful, thanks Irene!

  9. Irene, I love when I see a red fox; they have beautiful contrasting colors! I love your poems and I enjoyed your exchange of words between both poems. We went hiking in the lower Adirondack Mtns last Saturday. The red maple trees were just starting to turn; their bright leaves are my favorite kind. When I hike, I pick up leaves just like I did when I was a kid. The colors never cease to amaze me. Love your whimsy bright blue canoe garden. Thank you for your inspiration.

  10. Is it just me...or are foxes calling to you? I seem to recall foxes popping up in past poems unexpectedly. I do love that flame! Whimsy is serving you well. That canoe makes me giggle -- and I would totally each kale grown in it! Ha! I'm already having little play dates with my idea for a word in 2023. I have to say, since I changed my perspective on what the word could/should be (starting the year you chose red) I am a new poet and it's so fun!
Thanks for the tip on the padlet link. I fixed it. Blogger doesn't love padlet. ugh.

  11. Oh golly--a fox for a soul, a canoe for a garden. Let me just look at everything in a new (and whimsical) way every day in October. Thank you, Irene.

  12. Fox and ablaze fit so well together. I can just see the red of the fox in that word.

  13. Oh, these are lovely, Irene. It's so hard to write a fresh fall leaf poem anymore, but you've done it!

  14. Mmm...I'm loving Picasso's line drawings AND your poems! Plus, that fox-souled maple leaf will change the way I see fall colors forever!

  16. Love your canoe, Irene! Wish I could have one too. Your haiku are terrific--I especially like the idea of the autumn maple having a fox's soul. What a wonderful take on fall color!

  17. Whimsical post, whimsical poems, and the evocation of so many images and colors. The blue canoe! The red fox! The blazing leaf! And hiding away from it all is that duck, whose lone, distant call I can hear. Lovely. And whimsical. :)
