Live from Highlights!

Hello and Happy Poetry Friday! Be sure and visit Sarah Grace Tuttle for Roundup.

The header is actually wishful thinking...but I am en route (driving!) to Highlights, where Charles Waters and I are leading a retreat on Poetry for Kids: A World of Publishing Possibilities. We're excited to share this time with other passionate poetry peeps!

Earlier this week I posted about ghosts of AFRICAN TOWN over at Smack Dab in the Middle. Read the poem here.

And here's my latest ArtSpeak: Animals poem. Yep, another Picasso-inspired haiku! (The 10th, actually. I just counted. :) Thanks so much for reading.

on dark autumn morn

rooster will not be silenced

the sound of sunshine

- Irene Latham

p.s. Whatever's happening in the world, however dark the day...we can all be roosters! xo

  2. Could not for the life of me use my phone to comment today! I ALMOST was there for the workshop...but arrangements were too difficult to make. Ended up being good that I couldn't go...but SOMEDAY! I love the "sound of sunshine"!

  3. Irene, this is lovely. I imagine everyone who reads it will have a slightly different take... To me, it feels like an allegory for activism. Thank you so much for sharing, and I hope your workshop is a delight! Happy Poetry Friday!

  4. The sound of sunshine--wonderful. Have a great time at Highlights with your buddy and friends. I'm jealous. I soooooo wanted to do that workshop. My schedule just won't allow for it right now. I will live vicariously through your 'Live from Highlights' post. Big hello to Charles too!

  6. Oh how I wish I could be at Highlights with you and Charles. Just not the time for me. In the future thought.....and yes, Rooster is telling us something, isn't he. Seek the light! You surely do in all you do. Thanks for all the light you put into the world. Janet F.

  7. The sound of sunshine indeed. I love that you say so much in so few words - whether we take it literally or as a call to action.

  8. Be sure you check out THE ROOSTER WHO WOULD NOT BE QUIET by Carmen Agra Deedy. It's a great companion book for your poem! (And since Hahn is German for rooster, I pick this as my favorite Picasso poem!!)

  10. The spareness of your haikus is the perfect companion to the single, elegant line of each Picasso sketch. Of course, "the sound of sunshine." I hope your Highlights session was also full of sunshine!

  11. Beautiful haiku, Irene. I love how your words and imagery feel as effortless as Picasso's drawing. Best wishes at Highlights!

  12. More Picasso, yay, and more Picasso-put-into-words by wonderful you! The only other thing we could ask for would be to have joined you and Charles at that retreat. It sounds fantastic!
