A Trinket for Autumn

yes, I have a pack
of these cards. :)
Hello and Happy Poetry Friday! Be sure to visit Jama's Alphabet Soup, for what's sure to be a beautiful-delicious Roundup.

Octopus-sized hugs to everyone who helped me and Agnes celebrate #OctopusMonth. It was so much fun for me! And I learned even more about octopuses from all of you. Thank you!

Here is the padlet with all the links. And here are the poems featured this week:

octo-zeno by Margaret Simon
2 for Tuesday with octo-poems by Diane Mayr and Sarah Burns
"The Wondrous Octopus" by Catherine Flynn

In the mood for giving?
Please join me and Karim Shamsi-Basha in giving wordless picture books to Syrian kids living in an orphanage run by the Cat Man of Aleppo. Our goal is to give at least one book to each of the 68 children currently living there. Read this post for more information.

And now: I've got an Autumn poem for you today, as fall has finally arrived in Alabama!

Autumn

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.

The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I'll put a trinket on.

- Emily Dickinson

And here is my trinket, in honor of autumn and Emily... and Agnes! (Who knew octopuses could be so much fun?!)

  1. Hooray for Agnes and Octopus Month. Eight hundred ways of awesome :). Thanks for Emily today -- her words are strikingly beautiful and feel fresh each time I reread the poem. Will look for some wordless PBs for your project! Love seeing you with that flashy brooch too . . .

  4. I'm so disappointed that I didn't get around to writing an Octopus poem this month, Irene! Too many caregiving duties meant that my own two arms were simply not able to accomplish everything I wanted to. I'm glad to hear the month was a huge success, though, and thank you for the padlet so that I can peruse it at my leisure. Love the octobling! :) xo

  5. I'll always think of Agnes and Octopuses each year as October rolls in, thanks for this new focus Irene. Love the Emily Dickinson poem (I started a persona poem about the trees in their gowns just recently) and your dashing trinket too! xo

  6. I've so enjoyed reading octopus poems this month. I had the best of intentions to participate, but somehow I never got past the idea of an octodoctor. Ah well...thanks for the link to the padlet and the collection of poems. I'm sure I've missed a few and will enjoying reading them.

  7. Irene, I am enjoying a backward look at Octopus Month at your blog. You certainly have touched a lot of hearts during your month of celebrating Agnes. While on Google Hangout this week, I did a chance to read my grandbaby my octopoem. Thanks for offering the challenge.

  8. Thanks for the Emily poem! It's lovely. Rain is stripping our leaves in NH, but the woods are yellow and golden still. Thank you for gathering books for the children of Aleppo! I will participate.
