Today I've got a collision of two blog series: Poetry Friday and the Butterfly Hours. Read on!
For 2019 I'm running a year-long series on my blog in which I share my responses to the writing assignment prompts found in THE BUTTERLY HOURS by Patty Dann.
This month's prompts are notebook, October, office, pajamas, paper, party, pencil, perfume, phone book, photograph, pictures.
OCTOBER
I have written A LOT about October. It might be my favorite month. So instead of a memoir piece today, I've written a poem.
October
Dreams
Inside October
waits a field
of plump pumpkins.
Inside a pumpkin
nests a clutch
of white seeds.
Inside a seed
echoes a breath
of fresh hope.
Inside hope
exists a world
where everyone holds hands.
Inside a hand
rests a knife
to carve a pumpkin.
Inside a pumpkin
lives a lifetime
of Octobers.
Inside October
sleeps a child
with orange dreams.

Wishing you orange dreams! xo
Wow! This is stunning, Irene. I love how you bring us inside to a place where hope resides, then out and back again to delicious "orange dreams." October is my favorite month, too.
ReplyDeleteOctober is my favorite month, too, and the granddaughters are already having those "orange dreams". One said the other day as we spoke of school starting that it also means Halloween is coming soon! I wonder, after reading Catherine's comment, how many love October? Now, happy August!
ReplyDeleteCount me in (another October lover)! The colors, the birthdays (both my kids were born in October), the cool weather, pumpkin chocolate chip bread, the holiday fun. And your poem is absolutely lovely - a delicious ode to October!
ReplyDeleteWow! I love October, too. (Fall has always seemed more like the new year brimming with possibilities - and October holds the promise of them all). Your poem captures that feeling of anything is possible in those dreams.
ReplyDeleteI love the circular litany of this poem--October is NOT my favorite (oh the beginning of the end) but I can appreciate the pumpkins and their lifetime of seeds full of hopeful Octobers...
ReplyDeleteIt got a little dark for me around about S5 with the knife!
This is lovely....in structure and emotion. Love the way you express memory. And, you make me want to write about something that's "in" October. Hmmmm.
ReplyDeleteOooh! Love the circular form of the poem!
ReplyDeleteI'm amused (and astounded) by how many people love October. Halloween isn't really a thing here in Australia - so that may be why I don't share the excitement? September is the delight of spring. October is a blip. But I did enjoy your poem. :)
ReplyDeleteAh, thanks for these lovely "orange dreams" Irene, and the roundness of the poem coming full circle–just as fall is, and which I love too! xo
ReplyDeleteIrene, I am so glad that inside a pumpkin lives a lifetime of Octobers. What a beautiful thought. I have been on whirlwind journey this year and my gallery collections have been waiting for me to organize them. I would love to post your October one in my Abundant Autumn Gallery collection if that is fine with you. Please let me know.
