Exciting news: next week Shannon Bramer will be here to talk about her book Nightmare Jones (illus. by Cindy Derby)!
For today I've got a new Tuesday 2-Minute Writing Tip for you...and it was inspired by a Mary Lee Hahn poem she shared on a Poetry Friday post last year. Thanks, Mary Lee!
I "matched" colors with the colors on this gorgeous Georgia O'Keeffe piece, and voila! Thanks so much for reading.
On the Day This Poem Fell in Love
the world was briny,
cloudless
sky streaked with gaiety
and knockout orange
earth pulsing green vibes
tipped with the taste
of juneberry—
that free spirit of the forest—
and every canyon yawned
freshwater and rapture blue
- Irene Latham

I'm excited! I'm a huge Shannon Bramer fan. Also...I'm excited! The way your title gives shape and purpose to what is both merely a list poem and a glorious wallow in colorspeak! I must go get out my Paint Chip Poetry box again and see what awaits.
ReplyDeleteLove this line, “ every canyon yawned”. I have a box of paint chips that I must pull out to play with. It came home with me from my classroom. Congrats to my fellow Inkling Mary Lee for being featured in your 2-minute writing tip.
ReplyDeleteExquisite poem, Irene (sigh)! Enjoyed your 2-minute tip about ideas too. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThe colors in this painting are so vibrant and those color chips took you beyond the mundane. I recently read about JO and her amazing art journey. So much I didn't know. I've just made a new vow to myself to write down new ideas! Thanks, Irene!
ReplyDeleteIrene, you radiate joy in your videos! They make me so happy. A weed that is beautiful for a moment - Lovely!
ReplyDeleteLove "tipped with the taste of juneberry" - thank you for this and your great writing tips, Irene!
ReplyDeleteYour paint chip idea! Love that. A riot of color and joy.
ReplyDeleteKnockout orange is a refreshing phrase any day of the week!
ReplyDeleteNo wonder there's love for this poem, Irene, you've brought the colors to life! How lucky we are to have such wonder in our lives!
ReplyDeleteI just got NIGHTMARE JONES from the library this week!
ReplyDeleteI have little containers of paint swatches at school. We are writing color poems next week in the library.
"every canyon yawned" -- LOVE!
OK, that was an amazing idea! The painting and poem together--colors and wonder of the words are breathtaking. Such a great idea for an ekphrastic poem! Thank you for your two-minute tip today. So much wisdom. You made me pick up my neglected notebook this morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks again for the honor of using my poem for your 2-minute writing tip! I love the way you wove the color words into your poem, and I agree with everyone who is swooning over the yawning canyons!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using color chips as inspiration for a poem! Thank you for sharing this with us! As Rose said earlier, "tipped with the taste / of juneberry" is a line to love.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous color poem! Like many others, I love how you used "yawned". So clever and fresh. In the midst of winter's limited palette, that painting and your poem are a treat for the eyes!
ReplyDelete"Rapture blue" makes me swoon. Perfect, Irene.
ReplyDeleteAhh....juneberry/free spirit of the forest. I want to be her friend.
ReplyDeleteOh, I had to stop by when I saw this painting! We went to a Georgia O'Keefe exhibit in Dallas when Sara was just a toddler in my arms. I still remember her ecstatic reaction to this painting. I love "pulsing green vibes" and "rapture blue." Might be time for me to play with paint chips again!
