dragon cloud haiku

Hello and Happy Poetry Friday! Be sure to visit Jan at bookseedstudio for Roundup.

In just a few days, I'll be traveling to Chicago to teach with Charles Waters at the Poetry Summit hosted by the Poetry Foundation. I'm excited to meet passionate-for-poetry educators from across the country! Charles and I will be talking about "poem as truth teller" and also leading a workshop on "poetry for a better world." Fun!!

For ArtSpeak: WOMEN I've got another piece by Gabriele Münter.

I've been reading Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros, so perhaps that explains the appearance of dragons! And there are more dragons in my future, as I scored a complete and in very good condition boxed set of The Last Dragon Chronicles by Chris D'Lacey.

Once, many Julys ago, I wrote an early middle grade book called St. Cecelia's School for Dragons. I was so excited about it! And then How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell came out.  And it became a whole franchise! So my little dragon book went into a cave.

But you know what? Those dragons have been popping out lately, asking to play...so who knows? Maybe I'll publish a dragon book yet! Meanwhile, here's a poem. Thanks so much for reading!

Who invited clouds

to storm our July picnic?

They look like dragons.

  3. Lovely dragon-cloud image and fun poem Irene! I haven't seen this yet, but there's an exhibit at the Field Museum of a "New Specimens Of A 240-Million-Year-Old Chinese "Dragon" https://www.fieldmuseum.org/blog/new-specimens-of-a-240-million-year-old-chinese-dragon Have fun at the Poetry Foundation workshop, it's such a rich gem in Chicago. If you have time take in the William de Kooning Drawing exhibit at the Art Institute, it's excellent, thanks Irene!

  5. I'll be watching our sky for dragons, and your space for more news of dragon books! (One of my favorites was the DEALING WITH DRAGONS trilogy by Patricia Wrede.)

  6. I watched the Jane Yolen interview that SCBWI sent out and believe in your tucked away dragon story. Her perseverance and sheer number of books written and published, written and put in a file, astounds me. We’ve had our share of “dragon clouds” this summer.

  7. How fun to be thinking about dragons! It's a topic I have never explored. Maybe they will show up in one of your books. Have fun in Chicago. They are fortunate for those educators to have you visit. By the way, I loved Some Starry Night. I found it very romantic and I loved how it put me inside their worlds.
