Just Another River Poem

Hello and Happy Poetry Friday! Be sure to visit the lovely Joyce Uglow for Roundup.

Check out my 3 Favorite Reads of 2026 over at Smack Dab! (I'm also asking for book recs there, if you have some!)

I'm in with a quick one from the Pocono Mountains, where I am sharing the poetry love with others at Boyds Mills.

The art comes from another woman from the Hudson River School of artists: Julie Hart Beers. My subject? Rivers. Again.

When I Was a River

Lines for a River

Quick Process Note: The last line had "once again" tacked on, and as I was making the graphic, I realized those words were unnecessary, so I cut them! Thanks so much for reading.

Just Another River Poem

no more river poems I said
yet here I am at your banks
watching you throw yourself
over boulders and ferry fallen leaves

it isn't the splash and sip
I crave so much as the current,
the way you push me into mystery:
where are we going?
what happens next?

they say every river ends
somewhere and maybe it's true
but even a dry riverbed carries
the crisp scent of possibility—

all it takes is a single storm
to set it flowing

  1. In September, the Aldo Leopold Foundation sponsored a presentation called "Thinking Like a Mountain: Sand County in Deep Time". Author Marcia Bjornerud shared "...how thinking like a geologist can expand your worldview and provide insights into the environmental crisis." There is truth in your beautiful line, "all it takes is a storm to set it flowing."

  2. Loving these river poems. I like how you address the river itself in this one. :)

  4. I don't think one can ever have too many river poems. 😊 There's a mystery to rivers that keeps pulling us back, inviting us in.
