Dear Martin,
- found in Martin Luther King, Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech delivered August 28, 1963, Washington, DC
Today injustice
still lives
in the corners
of our republic.
Yes, freedom
promises
brotherhood.
Equality
is awakening
whirlwinds
of thirst.
Fresh storms
rise up
on the red hills,
heat exalted,
hope jangling
into faith –
we join hands,
sing,
at last.
- Irene Latham
I wrote this poem last year for MLK day. View the original post here.
Also, here is a link to a post about my favorite MLK movie so far: SELMA.
Thinking of MLK today and all his good works -- and all we've yet to accomplish in terms of equality and the end of systemic racism.

"Equality is awakening whirlwinds of thirst" speaks loudly to me, Irene. I hope that many others get thirstier and thirstier in these coming months. I like that you wrote to Dr. King, a message of hope as he seemed to have always.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good post, thanks!
ReplyDeleteWow, I can't believe you found that within his speech and crafted that poem. I love it, and I, like you, loved SELMA! Such an important movie.
