Last week it was my great good fortune to spend some time with students at Pelham Oaks Elementary. The 4th and 5th graders had read LEAVING GEE'S BEND, and wow, were they a great group! I was impressed by what good listeners they were, and also by what interesting questions they asked. This is a direct reflection on librarian Kristi Plemons and all the teachers, and the way they made this story come alive for students. What an honor to share time with these readers! Here are some pictures from the day:
some great readers, Kristi Plemons, Irene Latham (and Ludelphia)! |
timeline of happenings in Gee's Bend
... and here is maybe my most favorite
thing of all, found on a bulletin board
full of "lessons or takeaways" from
LEAVING GEE'S BEND:
"That you don't have to follow the rules or draw inside the lines, to make something beautiful, and express yourself."
THAT is a poem! And: "Quilting is Art."
YES! And here's proof, in an autumn motif, from the recent Blount County Quilters Guild show held at beautiful Palisades Park:
Finally, I want to share a little from YELLOW KAYAK by Nina Laden, illus by Melissa Castrillon. It's a long poem about an adventure that begins:
Yellow kayak.
Blue sky.
Paddle swiftly
Wave good-bye.
I'm completely smitten with this book! I hope you'll check it out. Happy first day of November to all! xo
It's wonderful to see your picture with the school group, happiness shown! The learning quote is a special one. I'm glad you had such a great time there. I'll look for Yellow Kayak! FYI - your link isn't working on Tabatha's site! Happy November!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the great pics! And I echo your love for the takeaways from the book.
ReplyDeleteLove the autumn leaves on the quilt and the pic of you with readers of Leaving Gee's Bend. I love this book! I'm off to request Yellow Kayak.
ReplyDeleteHappy November, another favorite month of the year!
So much beauty! Poetry, happy readers, textile art, and a gorgeous book cover. (I added a new link to the round-up for you, btw.)
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how it feels to see response to a book you've written in this way. High-fives and hugs to the librarian and teachers to made literature come alive for these young people. And, so many planted seeds of writers and quilters and historians of the future. Woot!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great experience to be with a group of young people who have lived with and loved your words and story! I love the photo of all of you together as well as the poetic takeaway.
ReplyDeleteA rewarding school visit to be sure... the student takeaway board would be worth the trip by itself! I'll be on the lookout for Yellow Kayak—love the cover.
ReplyDeleteLovely!
ReplyDeleteLovely pic Irene, and it sounds like a rich and rewarding visit for all–with many sensitive thoughts from the students! I'd like to climb right into the "Yellow Kayak,"
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing it, xo.
As a quilter myself, I've been fascinated and inspired by the quilts of Gee's Bend ever since reading about their work. I have been wanting to read Leaving Gee's Bend for ages but my library doesn't carry it. I've contemplated purchasing a digital copy, but hate that I can't really donate it afterwards. In the meantime, I'll make a purchase suggestion to the library.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a fabulous visit with some special readers. What fun! And any book that starts with a yellow kayak has got to be wonderful.
ReplyDeleteHi Irene. Not sure if you are familiar with their "If I Had A Little Dream" also by Laden and Castrillon - I really enjoyed that one as well. Great photo! Love seeing your author visits. :)
