May Your Days Be Forever Red

me, Charles and Kat (at #NCTE2019)
Hello and Happy Poetry Friday! Be sure to visit lovely Kat at Kat's Whiskers for Roundup.

It's been a wintry week here in Alabama, but we've still managed to get out for our daily walks. I've been chipping away at my wip, and it's such slow-going... but yes, some rewarding moments along the way! I (finally) got the sewing machine out and accomplished a stack of mending... and I am working a new piece on my cello. Life is good!

Today I have for you another ArtSpeak: Red poem. This one's inspired by "Miss Mary Edwards" by William Hogarth. I do have a Miss Mary in my life -- though she is nothing like the Miss Mary pictured here! Do you know anyone who enjoys a "crimson life" like the person portrayed in the poem?

Miss Mary's Crimson Life

Mornings, a field
of poppies

Noon, a crush
of cranberries

Afternoons
           lazy
as strawberry jam

Evenings, a dream
-->
of cherries.

- Irene Latham

... and now that I'm looking again at the poem, I think I've got an alternate title to use if I pull this poem away from the art: "May Your Days Be Forever Red." (changing the subject heading now!)

  1. I love that pic of us! (I love lots of pics of us!!) I bought an overlocker before Christmas, so there has been lots of sewing projects happening here too. Lots of modifying and some new creations. I like both your title thoughts - but yes, if you take it away from the pic, the second title would be my choice. Such a burst of flavour poem. Rather delicious! xx

    2. Oh? You don't call them an overlocker? Ummm... A serger? The thing that cuts and finishes raw edges. I've not had one before, and am quite liking it. (Though not when I break a thread!)

  3. Seems like an over-the-top life for Miss Mary Edwards. I sometimes wonder what that life was really like. However, having a 'crush of cherries' sounds rather delightful! I'm glad you've having some good things happen, Irene, sewing and music!

  5. Red is such a powerful word for this year. Crimson life. ha! I don't know anyone quite so strong as that. But, Miss Mary is all that and a cherry on top. Thanks for letting us peek at your play with red words. They are fun!

  6. It's such fun to see what you're up to with your red project each week! Kudos to you for fitting in the walks. Our incessant rain has kept me from walking. I need to get reintroduce myself to the treadmill in the garage. C'mon Spring!

    1. ... or walk in the rain??? Though COLD rain isn't very much fun, is it? Spring's a-coming... if you were here, we could walk together! xo

  7. Too fun! I really have to think more about Miss Mary Edwards... I love the field of poppies and the crush of cranberries... but I want her to try raspberry rhubarb pie. Haha. And radishes! I fear you have opened a can of worms, so I will say thanks for the inspiration!

  8. I'd like to curl up inside your poem Irene, in between the poppies, cranberries, strawberries, and cherries… what a grand invitation your poem offers–and gorgeous red dress Miss Mary's wearing, lovely–thanks Irene! xo I like the "…Forever Red" title too.

  9. Miss Mary has an indulged lifestyle, Irene. I like how you depicted her crimson life that is forever red. Have an indulged weekend for yourself and I hope it warms up for you. Yesterday, we took a walk on the boardwalk and I was surprised how marvelous the weather was (even though I was preparing for a windy, cold day).
