At the Window

I stand at the window
as snowdrops whirr

I dream at the window
as tree limbs shiver

I breathe at the window
as sunbeams stir —

I am not cold.
I am listening,
                learning —

No matter how others hurry
the world at the window

says, I am here,
                 waiting.

  1. Lovely. We are all waiting at the window these days. I love the soothing tone of what the window has to offer. It reminds me of the distinct scent of the windows I grew up with -- with their leaded glass panes. I was waiting then too.
It was my pleasure to blog/review for This Poem is a Nest this week. What a book! I predict awards.

    1. Thank you, Liz! It was a dream of a writing experience. I loved every minute... until the very end, when we were frantically making sure every word was accounted for, and in the proper order... madness! :)

  3. We have cooler weather coming so I guess very soon it will be me hearing nature call "I am here, /waiting". It is exciting to imagine the weeks of fall weather on their way, my favorite season. Lovely painting & poem for that young girl, Irene. And the blog tour these coming days is exciting, too, for more people to discover your new awesome book! Happy Friday!

  4. I love the idea of a window always waiting -- maybe waiting for a pair of eyes to look through and enjoy the view. Looking forward to hosting your new book for the blog tour, Irene!

  5. Congratulations, Irene! This Poem is a Nest is a treasure. Of course I sat down and read it immediately, but am so happy I'll have time this weekend to go back and savor every loving word. I imagine your window-watcher gazing out at a bird's nest, following that mother bird as she gathers "little bits of feather-fluff." Sigh.

  8. I was honored to be a part of the very early buzz for NEST, and it's thrilling to watch it gain momentum...actually I could say that of your writing career! I was there for LEAVING GEE'S BEND, and just look at where you are now! Write on! Your words do so much good in the world!

  9. I look forward to being the second stop on your blog tour. This book is such a great lesson in finding poetry wherever you are. Looking out of the window is one of the ways I get students to begin haiku. Write what you see. Wait and a poem will come to you.

  11. Irene, I am so excited about your new book. I received it and am delighted to be added to the Blog Tour. Your book is amazing and I am sure that it will be a great addition to any classroom or home library. Your Red poem is inviting me to continue to look out my window each day. "I dream at the window
as tree limbs shiver"-what great lines!
