Why Evening Comes Early in Autumn (poem)

Hello and Happy Poetry Friday! Be sure to visit Linda at TeacherDance for a Halloween themed Roundup.

It's Halloween weekend. Yay! My car and I will be participating in a community Trunk-or-Treat... I've even hobbled together a costume to wear: Spider Goddess? Web Mistress? Spider Charmer? I don't know, but you're probably getting the idea. I'm just glad it's not one of those sweat-while-you're-trick-or-treating times.

What are you doing to celebrate?

This week's ArtSpeak: FOUR SEASONS poem is about the short and getting-shorter days. Thank you so much for reading!

Why Evenings Come Early in Autumn

sky battered and bruised
by a million wings

lake a threadbare quilt
stitched with fading ripples

no wonder drowsy sun
refuses to hold up its head

  1. No wonder. Yes, the end of October feels just like this. There's been a lot of running, jumping, playing, flying and we can't even stay awake through dinner. You've found a way to make even that, pretty. Thanks for the word picture to illustrate that gorgeous painting.

  2. Oh, that's beautiful. No point in waking up the day anymore with all that migration and waves rippling going on. Happy Trunk-or-Treating!

  3. It is very gloomy here today, cold and rainy. The sun is definitely not holding up its head or even show its face for that matter! Thank you for your lovely poem. xo

  4. I love that 'drowsy sun', Irene. It's 6:30 here & full dark &that means in another week, our daylight savings time ends, & the time will be 5:30 - Yikes. I also love imagining you in a costume at the Trunk-or-Treat. What a fun idea for your community! I am working at the bookstore Sunday, will be giving out some treats, to everyone! Happy Halloween!

  5. Thanks for reminding me of the beauty in Autumn's shrinking days. I don't think we've EVER had a "sweat-while-you're-trick-or-treating." This year started off mild enough for no-coat-over-the-costume, but half an hour in, the rain started. Wah!

  6. Last night there was a cloud cover that the setting sun peaked under and left an impressionist-style hue over the sugarcane. Would've made a beautiful painting. I am enjoying a weekend of grandboys and Halloween.

  8. Your images are so beautiful, Irene. I read your poem over and over, just getting lost in the words. I love fall, but I don't love that it is the harbinger of chilly and dark days ahead. You captured it perfectly.

  11. What a beautiful exploration of autumn - love the language and imagery you've used in this poem. Have fun "trunk or treating." (I've never heard of this but what a fun idea!)

  12. October is tired and bruised... Haunting. We had a hike this morning on a brilliantly clear 39 degrees outing. No sweating here! Happy trunk or treating!

  13. Irene, you have captured nature in its transition phase in such a beautiful way. The imagery couples beautifully with the painting. The sky has been especially beautiful this autumn. May I capture this ArtSpeak for my Bedecked in Autumn Gallery?

  15. I love this. The lake as a threadbare quilt. Hope Halloween was fun. We only had a few trick or treaters.
