Earlier this week we watched the movie Perfect Days. It's about a janitor in Tokyo who finds beauty in his simple life.

One son said it was such a great portrayal of an introvert.

Another son said, "that's me."

And this mama's heart thrilled to know these boys love nature, love creating, and they value simplicity and peace over materialism and chaos.

They love their lives. And so do we, their parents. No doubt this heartspace is where today's ArtSpeak: PICASSO poem hails from. Thanks so much for reading.

For Every Child Earth Cracks Open Her Toybox

Look!
sticks
pebbles
dirt
feathers
sky
puddles
leaves
and a zillion
singing, creeping
things
whispering
will you
be my friend?

  1. Irene, I so enjoyed the live reading from so many outstanding poets that you organized this week, and I am looking forward to the Highlights event as well. You bring wonderful people together!

I added Perfect Days to my movie watch list. It seems uplifting and affirming, and there are many days when I could use that! So delightful that your son saw himself in the movie.

Oh, For Every Child Earth Cracks Open Her Toybox – simply gorgeous!

  4. A poem of perfection, and a title even moreso. The word "cracks"--like a heart breaking open to make more room.

  5. Oh, Irene! This is so precious. It reminds me of the poem I shared today. "a zillion singing, creeping things" What a world! If everyone could have a childhood like that to live on in them today.

  6. Our respective inspirations are drawn from many quarters and that is what makes poetry so splendid. Irene, the line length brevity works so well. Simple pleasures appreciated within a simple life. Uncomplicated images present for the reader. Your pared back poem works so well.

  8. I've had a few weeks of rush, rush, rush...lots to do, lots to worry over and deadlines to meet. But, this poem slows me in the most wonderful way. I am one of those children saying, yes, let's play!
