Last Day of Summer
after “Wheat Fields with Cypresses” by Vincent van Gogh

It's true: soon
green hills will fade
to brown

but cypress knows
today is not a day
to cry –

not when cotton candy
swirls the sky

and wheat fields wave
their golden hands,
goodbye,
                 goodbye!

- Irene Latham

ETA: I think a better title for the poem might be "Last Day of Summer." Always editing....

  1. Beautiful painting! You delight us every day with these pairings. Love this image: "...wheat fields wave their golden hands..." And the gorgeous swirly sky! I have to borrow Robyn's words from yesterday - *Sigh* and *Swoon.*

  3. Honestly Irene I could use your poems with kids about capturing the essence of a thought, be it from a painting, an idea, an experience with your wonderful work and poems. I love this. It's so able to stand alone. And evokes what we feel at summer's end that always comes too soon.......Janet Clare F.
